When people think about where bees come from, they likely think about the hives and nests in which they see so often in backyards and around their houses. They imagine a hive with all the workers bees making honey in order to please the Queen bee, and keep the hive functioning for the benefit of the whole colony.
Little do most people know while they walk around their backyards and through parks during the warmer months, watching out for bees and potential stinging, there might be a whole colony of bees right beneath their feet. That is because there is a type of bee that dwells underground instead of tree branches and other areas beehives may hang from.
These types of bees are known to the world as ground bees. Ground bees are female bees that seek shelter underground in order to protect the eggs they lay. Ground bees either dig the tunnels and burrows themselves, or sometimes just start their colonies by finding previously used homes from other underground animals such as groundhogs or rabbits. Ground bees make their tunnels to be a ¼ or ½ inch in diameter. These tunnels have chambers where the pollen and nectar is stored as food for the colony. Ground bees also make sure the soil in which the tunnel is dug is light in vegetation. It also must be loose so it is easy to dig and there cannot be obstacles within the tunnels.
Ground bees usually build their nests so they are undisturbed, but sometimes ground bees get in the way of people's activities. Some dangerous areas ground bees can build their nests are playgrounds, backyards and gardens. If this is the case, a person should consider getting rid of ground bees by exterminating them.
If planning on getting rid of ground bees, there are a couple of options available. If wanting to get rid of bees the independent way, there are various home methods that exist. If the home methods are unsuccessful, then a professional exterminator should be called to get rid of the potentially dangerous ground bees.
