With the pervasiveness of the ant species, identifying types of ants can be difficult. However, once armed with the knowledge of each ant’s basic characteristics, identifying types of ants can be rather easy.
The most common type of ant is the carpenter ant. These large black ants are the most difficult type of ant to control because they amass in such large numbers.
The carpenter ant usually appears in the spring and builds nests in damp wood found near sinks and pipes in houses.
The army ant is golden to brown in color and ranges greatly in size. These ants have a hierarchal society within their grouping. The queen ant constructs the ant kingdom by laying the eggs. The workers then care for the eggs and nurse the larvae. The queen is simply responsible for the reproduction for the colony.
Carpenter ants generally are harmless to humans; fire ants are not. Fire ants are named after their burning stings. They also are known as red ants, due to their bright orange or red coloring. These ants are very small and can be distinguished by their aggressive behavior.
Like fire ants, velvet ants can sting. These insects get their name from the hairs covering their bodies. These red and black insects actually are wasps, though they look similar to ants. Velvet ants are recognizable by their painful sting and the squeaking sound they make when captured.
If you receive an ant bite, it can be an uncomfortable experience. You will know by the small, red mark and blister that will form. Ant bites will be itchy and painful, but being able to identify types of ants can help you treat the bite. The best remedy for a bite is to apply a cold compact, wash the area thoroughly and resist the urge to touch or itch the area.
With the knowledge of simple differences like color and behavior patterns, identifying types of ants is easy; just remember not to bring your picnic basket.
