Pest Control: Carpenter Ant Bait, Poison And Extermination

Of all the guests welcome into a home, carpenter ants are definitely not among them. These uninvited boarders are one of the largest of the ant species. Black carpenter ants are the ones to look out for, but they are seen in many colors, including red. These pests cause problems by nesting in or near homes and chewing through the wood where they live. These nests are called galleries. Carpenter ants forage at night for food and water. Instead of letting them run families out of house and home, with proper inspection and treatment, carpenter ants can soon be packing their bags to leave.

Carpenter ants like to live in moist wood, and they may or may not make their galleries outside. It is highly possible the colony lives in another home or yard, as they can forage up to 200 yards. This makes ant control more difficult because it requires repeated inspection to ensure they are gone. Homeowners who are invested may opt to get rid of carpenter ants themselves or hire an exterminator to do the job.

The kinds of ant poison to use differ according to where the carpenter ants are found. If they are living outside and are coming in, a residual spray will do the trick. This is a perimeter treatment which will prevent future pests from coming back, including spiders and roaches. Demon, Cyper WP and Suspend are such spray products. The prices are dependent on the brand and amount purchased. They can range from $10-$110.

More successful options for indoor carpenter ants are ant baits. These are the newest options for the extermination of ants. The gel form is easier to apply in hard-to-reach places, and attracts the ants with moisture. Exposure to outdoor elements such as sun, water and heat can break down the ant bait. Depending on the brand and amount bought, ant bait can be purchased for between $20-$50.

Ant control can be further achieved by hiring an exterminator. Plenty of companies offer this service, and prices can be achieved by having an inspector check out the situation and deliver a quote. Some of the most well known extermination companies include Orkin and Terminix. Local exterminators are available nationwide, and it is always smart to get a second opinion.

Regardless of how they are exterminated, carpenter ants are an unwelcome addition to any home. They may be small, but their effect is profound. Ant control can be achieved through a gel, a spray or a professional, but any ant poison will effectively kill any unwanted pests. It is important to note a regular inspection will need to take place to ensure the problem is controlled. The sooner the unwanted guests are taken care of, the sooner a house can feel like a home again.
